Revised concept
Two worlds
One with colour
One without
The colour world is on top and the black and white world is on the bottom. (above and below ground)
I've decided to make this more interesting by making 'colour' an actual substance in these worlds, so 'colour' comes with weight (so its quite a heavy substance).
Main points to get across:
communication
co-habitation
people are never alone
Here is the storyline.
The story starts showing the two main characters in their worlds. It shows them day in day out maintaining their worlds. Due to the weight of the 'colour' it eventually drains off the buildings and into the ground where it sinks down to add colour to the black and white world.
So the colour characters job is to maintain colour in its environment (city) and the b/w characters job is to maintain the monochomatic landscape in his environment (foundations of the city).
Both characters feel quite overwhelmed with these tasks as the job is never finished.
Finally, the black and white character breaks down. It can't take it anymore. So it in an effort to release its frustration over the situation accidentally pulls on one of the smaller foundations to a building. This building being smaller than the others fell down into the black and white world which in effect opens up a void that acts as a drain for the colour to fall into the b/w world.
After discovering and going down/through this void/hole, the colour world character discovers that there is a whole new world beneath its own - in black and white.
Meanwhile the b/w character is in despair over the sudden influx of colour that's contaminated its world, thinking that its all its fault it doesn't know what to do and so just sits as the colours that were drained attach to him, weighing him down.
The draining of colour in the colour world has also cause the color character to be devoid of colour as well, most of its colour was dependent on the world of colour too. But as it travels though the b/w world (which is now completely coloured) it seems to attract the colour that had fallen on to the b/w world, soaking the colour back into itself. Meandering though the b/w world, it eventually finds the b/w character slumped on the 'ground'. Reaching out to touch the b/w character wondering what was wrong with it, the colour that had fallen on to the b/w character is immediately soaked up and absorbed by the colour character.
Realising that it didn't feel weighed down anymore, the b/w character realises that the colour character was there next to it and that that character is fine with the added weight of the colour.
Realisation dawns on the coloured characters face as it begins to understand what has happened. The coloured character makes gestures and notions the b/w character to follow it.
Both characters go back to the coloured characters world and realises that the main reason the colour kept draining out was because the colour was so heavy it seeped through the ground.
Through communication with many gestures and sounds, they decided to brake down the existing ground/barrier and build a new one out of both colour and black and white. One that was strong enough to keep the colour in the colour world although they keep a way - perhaps a trapdoor? as a permanent link between both worlds.

Final concept, storyboard and timeline
There are only two main characters in this story and each one is in their own little world. They inadvertently entangle themselves into the other character’s world via their actions or their reactions. One of the characters stumbles across an object and out of curiosity activates the object by accident. Trying to stop the object, it only makes things worse. Each time the object activates, it affects another characters world. That world’s only difference is that its buildings contain colour.
The device drains a portion of that worlds colour and places it into the world without colour. The character inside the world with colour notices the strangeness in one of the buildings - that it doesn't have any colour. Out of curiosity, it touches the building and the colour immediately comes rushing back although it is not without consequence. By touching the building, the character has restored the colour of the building but by doing so it also drains a part of its own colour. This continues with actions and reactions until both worlds become so entangled that they eventually swap. The two main characters that were not used to the world being devoid of colour or so full of colour (themselves included) die in their own worlds in an environment that they cannot survive in.
This animation will be created in Maya using 3D models to render out a 2D animation using Toon shaders and real life imagery (photos) to complete the effect. Targeted towards slightly older children (early teens) the moral of this story is from the saying “Curiosity killed the cat” and illustrates this in a slightly morbid way (because there are two deaths.)
There will be no dialog in this animation. Using “blabbering” or “baby-talk” type sounds to replace the dialog or to set the atmosphere of the scenes, the animation will slightly resemble the Claymation – animations like “Pingu” or “Pib and Pog” by Aardman.
So the animation basically alternates between the two worlds with cause and effect. I still want to think up a few more scenarios to act as a catalyst for the destruction of both the worlds but until then this is what I have.
Here is my storyboard so far:

Here is the timeline that I've set for myself. I've given myself a 'cut-off' date for alterations on the storyboard and character development so that I definitely know that I'll have everything done on time so I can solidly work on animating and creating assets.

Update on Production plan/Idea
Concept and Keyframes
Main basis for concept: Cause and Effect.
Basic storyline concept:
There are only two main characters in this story and each one is in their own little world. They inadvertently entangle themselves into the other character’s world via their actions or their reactions. One of the characters has a particularly controlling nature which then causes the other character to face the consequences of the first one. The second character reacts to said consequences by doing something which brings the second character closer to the world/environment of the first. Pretty much the same thing happens until eventually the two worlds are entangled and causes a single massive event with dire consequences or perhaps the second character gains retribution over the first.
I've made 3 keyframes of what my animation may look like. Here they are:
This first image is of the first main character (loves to take control of things, see what things do and also causes the destruction of both worlds).

So this image is of the second main character and its world being affected by the actions of the first, so this is the first sign of the leaking from one of the worlds.

This third image is of the two characters worlds leaking into each other and being entangled.

So those were the images of what my animation may look like. Initially I really wanted to incorporate some 3D into this animation but I am creating a 3D animation for the 3D unit and doing 3D twice doesn't sound quite as appealing and just doing one 3D animation would probably prolong my interest in that project. So I won't be using 3D in this project.
John made a comment today on the two very different styles in the world and that perhaps it would be hard to merge the two together. I wanted the second characters world to be almost like a child's colouring book so it sort of contains a feeling of naivety but I think John is right and the leap between the worlds may be hard to do.
So I've thought about the images and I've decided that I really like the collage one (first characters world). I'm thinking that I may just use that one world and since the first character's world (FCW) is desaturated, I think I might make the second character's world (SCW) colourful and as the story progresses the colour of the SCW then leaks into the first characters. Or as Elise suggested, perhaps have the SC be bleached of colour in an effort to save it's own world.
I'm still quite stumped as to what I could do as a trigger for these events to happen so I still need to brainstorm some more on this.

Semester two Digital Arts Studio Project Concept
So for my initial concept, I thinking of taking elements of the dream that I had and turn it into a narrative that I can animate. So far the idea that I have is to have a two main characters who both exist in the same environment and their lives unknowingly affect each others lives. Based off the idea that John gave me about drawing out ideas and expanding on them. I know so far that I want to have a characer which controls an aspect of the environment and that directly affects what happens to the other character. I still need to flesh out the idea some more but I should have the rest of the concept some what completed and have a frame or so of the intended finished product up on friday sometime.

First Thoughts On A Blank Page
I have a new blog! Hurrah! This is the first blog posting in this account. Salutations, welcome...and all the other friendly greetings out there!
Yep, here is where I will be posting (regularly) my thoughts and other little bits'n'pieces of info that I happen to stumble across or fall into that I find interesting.(Stop reading here and skip to the link if you want to bypass my meandering way of writing.) Or might invoke a feeling of inspiration - the euphoric feeling in the return of one's artistic muse. Or maybe just the ranting of (hopefully)artistic or multimedia-ish mumbo jumbo...or no mumbo jumbo or any ranting of any type at all (this blog is probably gonna be like that more often than not). This account, unlike my devArt and livejournal will be well used. I'm aiming to post at least one a week. So if I'm not doing that, you have permission to bug me until I do.
Posts on this blog may also just comprise of hyperlinks to websites that I believe are good (my references as I find them). In fact, here's one now. I'm sure that most of the people that will be reading this has already been there. It's an entertaining site, the main character can keep visitors entertained for a while (I think I've given it away a bit). Anywho, here it is: http://www.neostream.com/ you'll know when you see it. It never fails to inspire/amuse me.
At the moment, for MMD3307, we've received our first brief, well...I have. For three days now. Four even. So the gist is this: Create an exhibition concept that relates to Multimedia & Digital Arts, develop a concept for the exhibition space, research and experiment with the use of projected media, produce a moving image clip between 2-5 mins in duration that can loop and design and cost the exhibition space.
So far, these past few days, I've been thinking about what it is like to be a student of Multimedia & Digital Arts and the big question of what is Multimedia and Digital Arts some ideas have popped up:
- students do a lot of travelling to attend classes so perhaps something about the mode of transportation used by the students?
- perhaps something to reflect the changes in our work? (IE: the way we improve, or perhaps regress, or even just coast - just changes!)
- the use of experimentation? Multimedia and digital arts is a big field...lots of experimentation to be done - so perhaps that.
- or maybe focus on the ways that multimedia and digital arts has in a way merged with its surrounding environment where the line between virtual and real worlds are blurred (I've just been reading the reader...so maybe something about the augmented realities? BTW, here's a site that helped me to understand more about what it AR is, its in the footer of a page in the reader...but here it is again, it helped me to put a visual on it: http://www.howstuffworks.com/augmented-reality.htm to me it's sorta like a scanner glasses thingy from something like Dragon BallZ that integrates with the world. Oh yeah, just the website www.howstuffworks.com is pretty cool - want to know how to pick a lock? Look it up there.)
I know that I want to create a video loop (for projection) with something that merges in with the environment of its surrounding space...IE: a projection that doesn't look like a projection, something subtle but noticeable. Hm, not too sure I made a lot of sense there...but, I'm just getting a couple of thoughts down. I'll have something more developed tonight I know it! Ah, the muse is coming back again!
Well, until next ti...whenever I get near a computer or have something to share.
